Although bedbugs were once found only in cramped or unsanitary living conditions, they are becoming increasingly common across North America, anywhere from low-income housing to high-end 5-star resorts. Bedbugs get their name because they find shelter in human bedding and feed on humans while they sleep. A bedbug is about ¼ inch long, translucent milky white & round like confetti. After a feed, it will be about 3/8 inch long, red and rounded. Bedbugs like to hide in bed frames, behind headboards, in furniture and behind loose wallpaper. When found in hotel rooms, they can quickly ruin a vacation.
Preventing a Bedbug Problem
Before you settle in to any hotel room, check all their favourite hiding places and don’t take your luggage into the room until you’ve confirmed there are no bedbugs. If it’s too late and you stayed in a hotel with bedbugs, they may get into your clothing and luggage, causing you to bring unintentional souvenirs home. If you suspect that your hotel had bedbugs, you should vacuum out your bags in the garage before you bring anything into your home.
Dealing with a Bedbug Problem
Once in your home, bedbugs are difficult to get rid of. They may have painful bites, and may cause allergic reactions in some people. If you think you have bedbugs in your home, call a professional to identify and go over the “Bedbug To Do List”, before you go out and buy a new mattress. Bedbugs can hide anywhere, so unless you treat them correctly, they will simply crawl to other areas of your bedroom or home. Purchasing a new mattress and boxspring is highly recommended; however, it should not be brought into the home until the second treatment is applied. Furthermore, we highly recommend the new mattress and boxspring be covered with NPMA bedbug covers.
When it comes to bedbugs, it’s best to hire a professional to handle the situation. At S.O.S. Pest Control, we’re experienced at dealing with bedbug infestations.
